What is Pinyin?
Pinyin or Hanyu Pinyin 汉语拼音 was developed by the Chinese Government in the 1950's and officially adopted in 1979. This system uses Latin alphabet to transcribe Chinese, making it the most popular method for non-Chinese natives to learn Chinese. It is the standard method for teaching Mandarin to children in Mainland China; but in Taiwan a different system is used.
